Chuck and Barbara work with church planting in a Muslim area. Their work includes training of new pastors, mentoring elders, and supporting the growth of each local church.
Chuck grew up in Butler, Pennsylvania in a Catholic family. He first heard the gospel in high school and began to grow in Christ through involvement with Campus Crusade while at university.
Barbara, whose father worked for an oil company, grew up in Japan, the Philippines, and England. Ever since becoming a Christian in high school, she has been interested in serving missions.
Chuck and Barbara met while studying at the University of Pennsylvania, where Chuck earned a B. A. in Chemistry and Barbara earned a B. S. in Occupational Therapy. They were married in 1975, have three children (all married), and a growing number of grandchildren. From 1976 to 1978, they served with Operation Mobilization in Europe and Asia.
Chuck received a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Seminary in 1982, and served as associate pastor at Church of the Redeemer in Philadelphia for five years.
Since 1989, Chuck and Barbara have served the church-planting and church-nurture teams in South Asia. Chuck's work focuses on training pastors, elders, and church planters. Barbara works with handicapped children and their families.
Ministry of the church-planting team
Our vision is to see God bring about a united and indigenous explosion of vibrant, reformed churches and presbyteries in this region. Our aim is that each church be grace-focused, self-supporting, self-governing, and organically multiplying.
Partnering with New Life Presbytery of the Reformed Presbyterian Church
This church has a good history of association with our organization. The leaders' vision is similar to ours, and they have requested our assistance. Phil (team leader) and Chuck have become associate members of the Presbytery and are serving on several strategic committees. Thus, we are able to offer support, guidance, and teaching in a variety of contexts.
Partnering with Presbyterian Theological Seminary
We are in teaching specific classes most central to our vision, including Church Planting, Homiletics, Worship, and Church Government.
Mentoring church planters
We believe genuine change and growth comes not only from imparting information, but through working together with others to accomplish specific goals. We plan to work closely with recent graduates of the seminary and others, in internship programs aimed at equipping them to be effective church planters and pastors.
Equipping church planters
Effective service of ruling elders is vital for the life of the church. This is true in urban areas, but it is even more so in rural areas where scattered groups of believers often cannot afford to support a seminary graduate to serve as their full-time pastor. Therefore, we will seek to develop training programs that can equip self-supporting ruling elders to minister effectively in shepherding God's people in their villages and in reaching out with the gospel to those around them.
